The Archives

The Baranov Museum Archives contains a vast collection of materials chronicling the history of the Kodiak and Aleutian Islands region. The archives encompass library and archival materials, including books, newspapers, oral histories, manuscripts, photographs, film and maps.

The archives also includes includes an outstanding collection of approximately 25,000 historic images. Glass slides, negatives and prints portray the people of southwest Alaska at work, at home, at sea and at leisure.

• The Carolyn Erskine Collection depicts Kodiak life in the 1920s including the Erskine House, social life, and the commercial whaling industry.
• The Learn Collection includes scenes from the Baptist Mission Orphanage on Woody Island at the turn of the 20th century.
• The Don Brown Collection shares images of life in Kodiak during the boom years of WWII through the lens of a serviceman stationed on the island.
